How to Remove Water Stains from Wood

Wood is one of the most exquisite and on-hand building materials.

Each wood has a unique wood grain, texture, and color that can be used for various furniture, flooring, and home structures like patios and decks.

However, wood can easily stain or rot if it comes in contact with water. Besides that, it can lead to mold formation, termite infestation, and health issues, which aren’t healthy for everyone.

So, in this guide, we’re going to teach you how to remove water stains from wood. The good news is that you can use certain household items to effectively get rid of those noticeable marks.

1) Use toothpaste

Use toothpaste

For this, you’ll need regular toothpaste without whitening agents or gel composition as well as a clean cloth or towel.

Dab a bit of toothpaste onto a clean cloth. Polish the stained wood surface by slowly rubbing the toothpaste onto it until the stains have cleared.

Afterward, clean up the dirt and toothpaste residues on the wooden surface.

2) Dry the stain rings

Dry the stain rings

Fresh stain rings on the wood can be quickly removed by hair-drying them. Because they blow off stronger heat and air, they are a lot better than directing a fan onto the surface to dry it.

Plug in your hairdryer to a socket, set it to the highest setting, and then target the wood stains. Hold it there until the damp stain disappears, which should take about 10 seconds or so.

Next, buff the stained area with a furniture oil so that it looks new and natural. But if you don’t have furniture oil, you can substitute it with olive oil.

3) Get mayonnaise

Get mayonnaise

Although mayonnaise is quite sticky, it’s very effective in tackling wood stains and water rings. The reason is its oil content can absorb the moisture and remove the shadowy white residue on the wood.

All you have to do is dab a soft tissue or clean rag onto a small amount of mayonnaise. Place it over the water rings, and leave it for a few hours or overnight.

When you come back, wipe the leftover mayo and finish off by applying wood polish. As a result, the material will look shiny and be protected from accidental scratches.

4) Combine olive oil and vinegar

Another solution for removing water stains on wood is to simply mix equal parts of olive oil and vinegar in a plastic container or a bowl.

The purpose of olive oil is to polish the wood, whereas vinegar acts as a strong cleaning agent for the stain.

Similar to the methods above, dip a clean cloth or towel onto the DIY solution and apply it to the cloudy water rings on the wood. Finally, wipe the affected area with a cloth to clean and dry it.
