4 Reasons Why Your Oven Smells Like Gas

Smelling gas when you turn on your oven for a few seconds upon turning on the range is normal. But outside of that, you should be alarmed if a gas smell is coming from your oven.

You shouldn’t touch the gas or electric stove and report this immediately to your local emergency service or fire department for everyone’s safety.

Now in this article, we will explore the reasons behind your oven smelling like gas, how to identify its problem, and what to do about it.

1) It’s your first time using it

It’s your first time using it

At first, when you turn on a brand-new oven, the gas travels into oven burners to light them up. This can give the unexpected smell of gas, but it’s nothing to worry about.

The gas smell should disappear over time as you use your gas stove or electric oven. And there’s absolutely no need to call a repairman.

2) You haven’t removed all packaging materials

Prior to using the oven, make sure you have removed all packaging materials both inside and outside the appliance.

Otherwise, a chemical or odd scent can come out from it since the packaging is heated. This can create serious fire, health, and environmental risks. So you’d want to avoid this problem altogether.

3) The gas is leaking

When your oven is running for two minutes or more and you can smell gas (like rotten eggs), it’s strongly advised to switch off your oven as well as the main gas source, at once.

Leaking gas is a terrible problem because it’s highly flammable. It can flow out from the oven and react violently to electrical sparks or fire in other places of your home.

What you can do about this is to dial 911 or the hotline of your fire or gas company while getting your family or pets to evacuate. In the meantime, open the windows and doors to increase airflow and head out of the place until a specialist has fixed the problem.

4) Your oven or gas source is damaged

If your oven is shut off, but you can strangely smell gas at home, the problem can be that your oven or its gas line is damaged.

Turn off both the appliance and the gas line, and open your windows and doors to let the toxic air out. Never attempt to repair the oven or gas leak yourself unless you are professionally trained.

You may also get headaches or dizziness from unintentionally inhaling the leaking gas at home. If you experience it, go out of the house and call for emergency help immediately.

Once the situation is under control, get an oven repairman or gas specialist to fix the oven and gas line.
